addiction...

... to technology.

i realised that ever since i changed my phone, i've been checking my emails, facebook, and tweet many many times a day. i agree that having access to the internet made things a lot more convenient for me, because i can get to go online almost anytime i want, but somehow, i realise this urge to keep checking those applications are slowly sapping away my time and energy.

i used to enjoy the time spent with myself while travelling on the roads, appreciate nature while walking down the streets, and just simply living the moment. but now it's become a habit for me to just whip out my phone to go online unnecessarily, and totally neglect the things which are happening around me.

i also noticed that it's a trend for youngsters to listen to their mp3 every single available moment they have. be it while travelling, or walking for a short distance, or doing homework, or even when talking to people. have people become so dependent on music/noise that we fail to appreciate the natural sounds around us? have people become so dependent on the internet that we fail to connect/interact with people face-to-face?

i plan to stop myself from checking my emails and facebook unnecessarily from now onwards, because it's just an addiction. it doesn't help me in living a better life, nor helping others lead a better life.

we should never be slaves to technology, because our lives are made for a greater purpose.

How are you?

Dear 1E4,

Great to see some of you in school.

I hope you're enjoying your holidays so far! It's interesting how some of you complain that holidays are not fun. I can't wait to start mine. Hopefully after this week i can take a break and enjoy myself, meet up with friends, spend more time with family and go for a short trip overseas.

Remember to have as much fun as you can during this June! Responsible fun of course. :)

Last day of school

Dear 1E4,

I hope you've enjoyed the class cleaning and talentime as much as i did! It was entertaining and i got to see the other side of some of you. :) All of you have been a great audience and since it was a success, i'll hope to organise another one and the end of the year. Receiving the prize for the best class decorations was also a great way to end the semester!

Have a good break these four weeks... :)

Daily quotes

I have this 'flip-chart' which has different meaningful quotes everyday for 365 days. I haven't been diligently flipping the chart and reading them, but today i remembered doing so.

The quote for 22nd May reads "He who plants kindness gather love."

How true. If you are kind to others, it's only natural that they love/like you. If not... it works the other way.

Have you been kind to others? :)

Results

Dear 1E4,

i hope you have survived the first day of receiving results. Are you satisfied with your marks?

Don't be too busy comparing marks, blindly doing corrections, and then putting your exam paper aside. I think it's time you seriously reflect on your performance, and think about how you can do even better the next time round.

Keep the faith. :)

Dear 1E4,

I'm sure many of you are feeling happy that you do not need to report to school on monday! Hope all of you are enjoying the break so far, and also having fun preparing for your talentime i hope?

Btw please help to spread the word - i'll be doing maths file check this week! So you can take these two days to make sure you have all your worksheets in the file, the content page is updated, and ALL corrections must be done.

See you all on wed!

Maths Mid-Year

Dear 1E4,

It's finally here. I'm as excited/nervous/anxious as you are!

Some tips for the final lap:

1) you can try new questions but do not spend too much time on that.

2) look through ALL the past corrections you've done. You can attempt to re-do it to check if you've really understood the concepts.

3) read through your textbook to refresh the basics.

4) read your notebook on thursday morning. please do not attempt anymore new questions in the morning and start panicking if you cannot solve it. it'll make you flustered and will affect your mood for the exam.

5) lastly, sleep early! the paper will be long - 2hrs. i really need you to be focused and alert throughout.

All the best!!

Regards,
Ms Huang

All the best for all your papers!

Just one more week, so hang in there!

Monday, May 3, 2010

Hang in there!

Dear 1E4,

I hope all of you are coping well with your revisions!

I remember when I was in secondary school, I used to think that studying for examinations was really stressful and I longed to be one of the working adults who no long needs to cope with the stress of exams or neverending homework. Are you feeling this way too? If no, good. If yes, hang it there, because everything will be over in 2 weeks' time. :)

Everyone used to tell me that being a student is the most enjoyable time of your life. But when i was a student, this idea just didn't make sense to me, because it was really not easy coping with so many subjects. Actually if there were no exams, being a student IS fun, right? So why are exams so difficult?

Have you thought of why some students think it's not that difficult to pass a certain subject, whereas other students think it's really difficult? Is it all about luck and intelligence? I shall not give you the answer, because i know you can find it out yourself. :)

Now that i've experienced both student life and working life, i wouldn't compare which is better. I think what's most important is to live in the present, and enjoy it.

My first trip on the Circle Line

I was having dinner at suntec and i felt really annoyed at the thought of having to walk all the way back to City Hall to catch a train home. I was tired and wanted to get home as soon as possible.

I'm really thankful to my friend who enlightened me that there's a Promenade station along the Circle Line, which is just outside Suntec's Carrefour, which will lead me to Paya Lebar station.

I took the train from there for the very first time and in just 5-6 stops i was already at Paya Lebar. Thanks to the Circle line, we can now go to Suntec or even Bishan much faster.

Have you taken it yet? :)

TGIF

Dear 1E4,

I just realised it's been almost a week since i blogged. It's been a really long and tiring week for me that i haven't got the energy to go online at night. And i believe it's been quite a stressful week for you too right?

Thanks to all those who helped in the class deco, no matter how much you've contributed. Let's hope for the best! :)

I'm glad this longgg weekend came at the right time. :)))

I'll post more light-hearted entries soon to brighten up your moods.

My saturday

I had two tickets to a concert organised by BRANDS for their 175th Anniversary, and it's a showcase of 4 youth talents, together with guest stars Taufik Batisah, Hady Mirza, Rui En and Wang Lee Hom. Since I was free, i decided to catch it with my secondary school friend whom i haven't met for a long long time. It's also because she used to be a fan of Wang Lee Hom.

It was a relatively short but entertaining concert with the youths performing solo using their musical instruments, and then performing with the stars later on. i'm frequently exposed to pop music, and it was nice to listen to the classical ones today.

My favourite song for today is Beat It, a song originally sung by Michael Jackson. Taufik Batisah performed it with the accompaniment of the piano and the violin. It was simply amazing! Who would have thought the musical instruments could actually complement the song.

The 4 youths today were superb, being so musically talented at such a young age. They all had something in common - they performed each piece wholeheartedly.

I guess as long as you put your whole heart into doing something, it'll definitely touch the people around you.

end of week 5

Dear 1E4,

it's been a week full of Algebra. I hope you guys are surviving. :)

We'll finish up 5.5 and 6.1 next week and go full steam for revisions.

Meanwhile, have a good break and enjoy the weekend!

Hope to receive more journals on monday.

Ms Huang.

a thought for today

Sometimes we got to be more selfless and look at things from a wider point of view.

Bad-mouthing and backstabbing create discord.

Why not control our mouths and let peace reign?

This way, everyone benefits.

journals

keep them coming in!

i'm receiving fewer and fewer journals week by week. There's a handful of you who are faithfully writing but i also want to read those which i haven't read for a longgg longgg time.

anxious

It's a rainy and cold saturday late afternoon.

I'm in my room marking your maths homework, and the feeling of anxiousness just set in, thus the urge to blog. I'm feeling excited about the mid year exams and i'm hoping that everyone will do better than before. It's my job to make you understand and love the subject. Do you? :)

Just 3 more weeks to go!

My engine has started, has yours?

a gentle reminder

Dear 1E4,

Besides your maths hw, please remember to prepare for your CME presentation on monday. I only have 1 hour for all of you to present, so please prepare your speech beforehand.

just 2 simple things i want to know:
1) what your drawing/poem/writing is about
2) what inspired you to draw/write it

have a great weekend!

PS. i will tell a piece of good news on monday. :)

Class decorations

Dear 1E4,

I've just received the results for class deco after the third round of judging.

Good news!! we're still the first in the secondary one level. :D

However, we're sharing the second place with 4E1 when i compare the results with the whole school. 2T1 is currently in the first place.

Good job so far! but of course i think we can still do better. Right? The next judging will be in early May, and i think we should put all our heart into the next task so that whether we win or lose, we'll still be proud of what we've done.

Will keep you updated of what we have to do.

Cheers,
Ms Huang

Friday, April 9, 2010

Hello everyone!

Dear 1E4,

I've created this blog for two reasons:

1) for me to send reminders about important things (eg, tests, exams, workshops etc etc)

2) my own 'journal' to the class, if i've got any feelings i want to share, about almost anything. (eg, what i feel about sports day, how i think the class is progressing etc)

Feel free to comment, but please DO NOT write anything offensive. remember to be RESPONSIBLE for your actions always and RESPECT one another. I hope i won't have to delete or ban comments if it gets out of hand. ok?

Happy week 4! (time really passes very quicklyyyyy)
